Going by the shape and length of the front leg of the base, isn't this a non-military style spike?
 
The shorter front arm of the spike base is ok because of the evolution of the helmet shell-becoming lower. Making place for the Wappen/Plate. e.g.: on Bavarian and Hessian Pickelhauben; (with fluted spikes). Hessian Kugelhelm as well.
Combinations of the cruciform bases with smooth spike do excist.
