It probably sounded really good in theory, sail up the Dardanelles and then bomb Constantinople. The Turks would raise the white flag, the way to Russia would be opened up and the war would be soon won!
While the bombardment began in February 1915 the Dardanelles campaign began 100 years ago today (March 18) when the British and French navies attempted to force the Dardanelles Straight. Having visited the site a few years ago and standing on the shore in person looking back, I can only say, "what were they thinking!"
