I realise that those who know what they are looking at don’t want to give pointers to fakers, but, equally, I don’t think it’s helpful to just condemn outright items that those who are new to collecting are posting in good faith. It would certainly make me feel ignorant and time-wasting and put me off posting if I were new to this game.

What any person needs to do, with any collecting interest, is compare the item in question to originals. This web site is a good place to start. Then it will become very quickly apparent that there is nothing correct about that hat.

I very often buy items that I am not familiar with, and spend weeks studying originals until I am half-blind and learn exactly what an original looks like. Then I make up my own mind.

I agree. Except giving pointers to fakers, they will get their info one way or another. It's not worth keeping honest people in the dark. Buying the fakers goods.

Hi Kaiserdigs,
While I agree that comments on your initial post were kind of sarcastic (the item was not without deserving it though...), please realize that overall this forum gives you access to a unique wealth of knowledge that is dispensed freely and generously. I wish Pickelhaubes.com existed when I started collecting... at that time, other collectors were mostly competitors who were just too happy to see you buying trash by lack of knowledge. I still remember a seasoned collector saying with a grin "If you don't know what you are buying, you don't buy". I learned the hard way, as many on this forum did. Now I am always happy to help, whenever I can, but I also relay Tony's advice.
Wishing you the best for the collection.

Regarding giving information to fakers, no we don’t want to do that. However, I would remind newer members that you can also contact other collectors here via Private Message or PM and ask for advice or why is this piece is a fake? I doubt very much, that any of our more experienced members would not respond and help educate. Preventing rip offs has always been a large part of our mission here! Finally, the last thing we want to do is discourage new collectors from asking questions. Any forum needs new people joining up, posting, participating and asking questions.
