Officers and senior NCOs of the 1st Uhlan Regiment and 2d Dragoon Regiment were authorized to carry a unique saber with an Eagle head on the pommel, a basket hilt and lozenge-shaped langets on the handguard. This is one of those sabers and was made by Carl Eickhorn. I have 2 sources that mention these and they give conflicting information on the differences between the sabers of the 2 Regiments. One source mentions that the saber of the 1st Uhlan Regiment also had langets on the backstrap, while the other says the two were identical but the 1st Uhlan was in gold (implying the 2nd Dragoon was silver). I think this saber fits both descriptions for the 1st Uhlan Regiment

Wow Bob - that is a gorgeous sword. I am a fan of DR2, and wasn't aware of this special hilt. Thanks for sharing!

This is a very interesting saber, referred to as M1858, they are quite rare, over the past years I have seen several copies at auctions. Last year I hit two of them, unfortunately I got rid of one, which I regret, it had a brass sheath. There are small differences in the construction of the handle, blade, I have not met two identical ones. In the presented saber, the scabbard seems to be a little longer than it should be, it also has a different inlet than usual, probably the vagina was selected for the blade. This does not change the fact that the saber is very interesting and noteworthy. Here are two of mine. Photos only such I have.
