Early marine

I don't have a lot of information on Navy stuff – but this one is different. It is a Marine with a couple of interesting anomalies. The back of the card written by a collector says 1880. I think it is before 1871. Notice the wappen. not exactly the normal Marine stuff. Also notice the field badge. it seems to be Prussian. now I don't know when the happen changed nor the field badge and it is not on the top of my research list – I will track it down eventually. Only Prussia had a Navy before unification. After unification the Prussian Navy was actually run by a Prussian general. He only had army experience.

Hi Joe

What a wonderful image, I agree, it is well before 1880 and likely a Prussian Marine. Sergio Semino has an officers example of the Tschako for sale which he dates as 1861, http://www.militaria-online.de/artikelnr_1935" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , it is priced well beyond my paygrade sadly, 5000 Euro's I believe. I'd love to own it though....

Thanks so much for sharing this....

Joe,

well it certainly before the 17 August 1875 introduction of the Kaiser Crown to the See-Bataillon shako. The pattern in your photograph was introduced in 1862.

Regards
Glenn

We agree Glenn :D I just posted this on Joe's Flickr site before seeing the same photo here-

"Beauty! It's so rare to find early photos of the Prussian Seebattaillon. Or maybe I've just been looking in the wrong places. I think we can narrow down his date a little. The blue felt shako seen here was authorised 6th Feb 1862, in 1875 the blue collar and cuffs seen here became white."

Cheers
Chris
