Ersatz black tin helmet

Dear All

Another ersatz from me... This time another variation of the Prussian tin helmet.

Bright black lacquered one-piece helmet within a liner being all leather held by a metal ring attached from the inside. The inside of the helmet is covered with a kind of ersatz material fixed to the interior by the four split rivets of the spike base and the two screws holding the wappen in place. All is looking completely untouched.

The chinstrap is made of leather but riveted at the back where the buckles are.

Cockades on the wrong sides but I have left them as shown as they are now stuck to the shell.

The helmet came with its cover, a standard cover which has been painted on with some sort of not reflective dark paint. The marking R91 painted in green can be seen underneath the paint and when looking inside the cover. Not sure whether it is original to the helmet but it fits it perfectly well and shows consistent tear and wear with the helmet.

Any comments welcome

Very nice ersatz! Looks like the cover was never taken off, looking at the paint still so good on the helmet.

Congratulations! :bravo:

Greetings, Coert. :thumb up:

That's a great example!

I had one very similar. All black tin, But all black with the exception of the brass Prussian Wappen, with no rear spine.

Interesting that it was manufactured with a rear spine as functionally it served no purpose from a structural view.

Thanks for posting it.

Fbc...A question concerning the interior pics of this unusual helmet: Is the interior lined in black felt? My Prussian tin version of this has a separate brown felt skull cap up in the crown of the shell as a bit of padding. It is not held in place by washers and spike brads as I think I see here. I also see a washer included on the end of the rear spine, again not "the norm". A very nice helmet with some unusual characteristics. :thumb up:

Hi Brian

Yes, the interior is lined with some kind of black padded felt (around 2mm thick). It covers the entire inner skull of the helmet. It is held in place by the four split pins which hold the spike base and the two front screws which hold the wappen ( just like the way officer wappens are held - although it is clearly not a plate of officer quality). There is also a screw to hold the back spine. All screws and pins have washers of roughly the same size.

It is actually a fairly good quality helmet, compared to some other ersatz helmets in circulation at the time.

Alex

Is it another one from the ex Baldwin collection? I think I already saw this lot...

Alex was at the auction so I bet he must have bought a few items. I wasn't able to win a single item online 😭😭
