Sunday October 16th 2011:
The missus, myself and some friends visited the Loncin Fortress in Liège-Belgium:
A small exhibition of Imperial German Headgear (part of the Brussels Army Museum).
And of course a visit to the museum and the fortress itself.
This Fort was bombarded by some 15000 shells of all calibre, finaly: August 15th 1914 at 05.20 pm the 25th 42cm shell pierced the 4meter thick shell of the fort's central part; and blew up the Ammo and powder dump...filled with 12 tons of ammunition.

250 Belgian soldiers still rest beneath the rumble. A national monument.

As if they still are assembled at the paradeground...

69 soldiers rest in the crypt: out of respect, I chose not to take pîctures.
These pictures can be found on the www.

Francis and Sabine (AKA 'The Missus')

We went to visit the Eben-Emael Fort as well-but thats WWII.
Just PM me if you'ld like to see some pics.

Poor little peaceful Belgium always stuck in the wrong place (between France & Germany) (1870, 1914, 1939)... (I have cousins on my father's side who are 50% Belgian living between Bruxelles and the border town of Eupen)

Love that Husaren Pelzmütze in the 'vitrine' you're posing next to Francis! Also happy to see I own a similar helmet from that display (the silver Bavarian Off. Chevaulegers)... :)

Ron,

Posing... :o ...moi ?

Yes, great stuff.
Makes me anxious to go and see the Brussels Army Museum once again...

A LeibHusaren Pelzmütze is always THE eyecatcher.
I'd like one in my collection ! 8-)

Rgds,
Francis
