Fahnrich Question

Does anybody know if a Fahnrich would wear an officer's brocade belt or a regular enlisted leather belt?

John,

until he passed his officers' examination and was thereafter entitled to wear the officers' sword the situation is clear; he wore the normal soldiers' pattern belt. Once permitted to carry a sword, the situation is not explicitly covered in the dress regulations. They merely state that the sword was suspended by an officers' pattern under-belt. As the Fähnrich was certainly not entitled to wear a officers' pattern brocade belt, it seems likely that in the field they continued to wear either an issued soldiers' pattern belt or more likely a private purchased claw buckled belt. See this portrait of Fähnrich Walter v. Bülow in 1914.

Thanks Glenn. I have a set which includes a Kugelhelm with officer Kokarden, dove head sword with officer's portapee, and a pipe all belonging to Jos Kuiffer, 8th Foot Artillery, Metz. I wondered which belt would have been worn with this set. I appreciate the info.
I'll post a thread on this set soon, I hope.

I really would like to see your helmet.

I will try to get photos posted this weekend, but for a quick view there is a photo in this thread:

It looks like any other Prussian Foot Artillery officer helmet.

:bravo: we need more pictures! Classic helmet for a Fähnrch. Domes studs and a very legitimate but also quite unusual ball. Hey real treat to see.
