I've come across a filzhelm with a metal reinforcing band similar to the metal linerbands found in later steel helmets, but not a liner band as it has nothing to do with the liner. The liner is stitched directly to the helmet, with this metal band, thin steel and about an inch and a quarter in width, then fixed down againgst it. The M91 posts are fixed thru holes in the metal band. The band is very rusted and seems to be a genuine part of the helmet, being obviously old and looking as one would expect for something of that vintage. The helmet itself, not in great condition and requiring some major restoration, is made of very thick, heavy felt, and the metal band gives the shell much greater strength than on normal felt helmets. (Wappen is a repro, so will be replaced!) Camera on the blink, so only have these photos, but I think the description gives the idea. Has anyone ever come across a filz like this, or is this one of those 'one of a kind' items, like the famous World War II steel helmet in bright blue paint that nobody can figure out what it was? All suggestions welcome.
