I recently watched a Three Stooges short from 1936 entitled Half Shot Shooters. Partly set during World War I, the opening segment incorporates numerous shots that appear to be outtakes from All Quiet on the Western Front. My best guess is that Universal sold this footage to Columbia Pictures (or any studio willing to buy it).
One glance reveals why this particular shot didn't make the final cut in 1930's Oscar winner for Best Picture. It would appear an extra in Horizon Blue and Adrian helmet either took the wrong direction or received the wrong uniform:
It's an expensive scene to flub.
