Besides missing the crown on the eagle, what do you think? Is the age/patina a bit odd? Something doesn't quite look right.

Nope
To my opinion the hole thing looks kinda blury nothing that you would expect with those plates if original

If this was advertised as a "dug item" I would probably say it was okay. The front is blurry as Jonas mentioned and the reverse looks to be caked in corrosion, or mud. The reverse does seem to be as detailed as the front and the solder (what's left) appears to be correct. My big question would be: "Since the Wappen is so aged and the patina is so dark, why do the brass attachments to the Garde star look new???".

John :-k

What I see is new prongs soldered on to the rear of the star. Those are modern and IMO incorrect in shape and should not be there. In my experience, issued Garde style wappen have small loops soldered to the star and leather wedges to hold them on to the adler. I have seen prongs on many officer garde wappen but always square cut ends and certainly not with this ""fresh cut" patina.

If it was 'dug', chances are it wouldn't be missing the crown, since these were on pretty good. The only time I saw cut crowns were post-war use by people who wanted to disassociate themselves with the monarchy. Maybe they dug it up in Munich!?
Dirty, messed up, I wouldn't trust it at all.
