Nice photo Joe,

just the chap with the IOD is a Vizefeldwebel, the remainder being Unteroffiziere.

Glenn

Ever notice the multitude of headgear for the Landwehr/Landsturm? These chaps are wearing a cloth(?) style hat which I don't believe I have noticed before. Same style as the more common oil cloth hat of which I have also seen with covers.

Was there any rhyme or reason for what headgear these type troops wore? You see the same type hat as in Joe's photo, M1860 shako's with both the Landwehr and State wappens, pickelhauben, and the kratzen. Sometimes it's confusing to identify what troop is what without the photo being identified or without a cancellation stamp. :-?

Speaking of M1860 Landwehr shako's, this sure is a nice example: ebay #6621986976. Someday!

George I don't think so. I used to think Landwehr wore Shakos and Lansturm wore oil caps. Tony challenged that idea and he was right. It seems they used whatever they had. This makes relative rarity impossible. But wait there is more! I think ... think that there are a couple RIR that had odd hats in 1914. I need to do much much more on this. The focus is on RIR212, RIR 226, and RIR 236. There may be more but I think these guys went to the field in police and fire helmets maybe even more. Pictures... pictures....

Glenn, as usual thank you! The tome is still growing.
