Have you seen this beauty?
Too bad the silk liner are gone...

But how can one tell it from a Elsaß-Lothringen Gendarmerie Pickelhaube again? However, I presume the correct configuration is 1 cockade (Reichs) for this one in either case, right?

What year/model is it?

I dunno, there's something about that one that doesn't sit right with me. It looks like a Bavarian helmet that's been modified, but I really don't know. The plate is missing the crown, but there were cases of these being cut off after WWI by the Spartacists (?) I also don't like the way the lacquer seems to have been sanded behind the plate or the fact that the state cockade was on there for a LONG time and seems to have been purposely removed, so much so that it took part of the lacquer with it. All in all, the photos aren't that good and each time I look at one, I find myself wishing for better photos that show more.
Like you, I'm interested in hearing other opinions, because mine may be total :-P

I agree, better pictures are required. However, the lacquer reminds of a fake haube I once owned and although I am not completely sure, it looks very suspicious to me :-k

Edwin

will not say anything about the helmet because pics are not very precise, but what I can tell is that this guy has a VERY VERY BAD reputation. Go and see his negative feedbacks, it s almost funny

Can't comment on the helmet eighter. But don't jump to conclusions regarding his reputation when he get's negative comments regarding a 10 $ item....
Mind;I do not know the seller!!
cheers

I do not pretend I can evaluate the helmet presented here, therefor my knowledge is far too limited, although some members on this forum seem to be able to judge a helmet in an instance, like if they were themselves present when it was made.
However, I and other members have had the luck to do good business with the seller and even had the opportunity to meet him in person. I can only state from my own experience that this person is not only an outstanding expert in the domain that we are all interested in, but also a very warm hearted, interesting and highly educated man, not to mention his broad interest in everything history. So to state that this seller has a very, very (twice!) bad reputation is an offence that I can not appreciate. Even more, the evaluations on ebay are so immensely open to fraude, even on this very own forum so often mentioned, that it makes me very sad some people still don't see the many traps in the ebay system which I totally disapprove.

I didn't say anything about the seller, just that the helmet doesn't look right to me. I see no reason to change my mind.

My friend asked me to post some more pictures of the helmet, here they are. You will notice that this helmet has not been tampered with in any way, clear traces of the Reichsadler plate on the helmet, makers' mark.

These are much better closeups; thanks!

Has the Reichsadler lost its crown because it's not obvious/highlighted on eBay?

What about the side missing a cockade where you see obvious traces of a previous one? As a colonial helmet, shouldn't there have been no cockade at all to start with or is this an Elsaß-Lothringen Gendarmerie Pickelhaube? (provided the latter had a State cockade?)

So the question remains as to why there was a second cockade on at some point as seen by the marks around the left post... [-X

To my eyes, the helmet is a decent and straightforward example of Reichslanden Elsaß-Lothringen mounted Gendarmerie. The liner is a detraction, but, with an starting price of $10.00, criticism seems pointless.
