German Picklehaube Bavarian Spike Helmet

Gentlemen:
May I invite your attention to US ebay and item # 6596978484? I am fortunate enough to have two Bavarian helmets, one found in a small antique shop while visiting Augsburg and the other procured from Herr Weitze. Each in its own way has great charm: an 1886 Em untouched by the hand of any "restorer" and an 1896 pattern helmet but of the "Depahag Patent" which is to say a syntehtic fiber for a OYV for the Bavarian Leib regiment.

The current offering appears to be similar to a model 1878 for the Schweren Reiter regiment but of course that helmet would not bear the royal arms of Bavaria but would display instead the sovereign's "L". Similarly, in those cases where I have seen lion mounts for the chinscales, they have most usually been surmounted by the Bavarian and not the National Kokarde. I am using as my guide Herren Seibold and Schultz and their "Die Helme der Koniglich Bayerischen Armee 1806-1918".

I welcome the usually exhaustive review by my fellow forum members.

Bis bald!

Dear Chas,

Crimson Mist Military antiques, eh? Wow. As if the ebay presentation weren't enough to give one chills. Looking at the pictures at:

it's hard to know what to say. I will have to bookmark this sight so as steer clear of it in the future! Thanks for the "Augen auf!"

Best wishes,

Can someone please translate this for me?

Hi Tony:

I believe Gary is inviting us to look at his reproduction helmet, which he listed recently on eBay, for comparison. Gary's reserve is 99 Pounds and the auction will start either Saturday or Sunday.

I looked for it, but it hasn't appeared yet.

Hi Gary:

Below are the links for the eBay item Zorndorf spotted, and, once again, Crimson's offering:

Hello Friends & Collectors,
I recently made a comment about rookie sellers and devious scumbags on ebay-add uneducated buyers and this piece sells for $785!-Al

Hi Al:

The winning bidder, "dorian5111," has exactly one feedback to his credit, and that was purchasing a brass bell. Located in the UK, dorian 5111 has been a member since November 2005.

Every time I see a profile like this, I get suspicious.
