A newly unearthed photograph from shows one of the earliest British tanks charging at its own lines after it was captured by the Germans and turned against its makers, in one of a remarkable set of images from World War I.

The images show the German high command inspecting one of the hulking machines in Berlin and adapting them for their own use, sending them charging at British lines in battle.

Some of the tanks were captured at the 1917 Battle of Cambrai, one of the world's first major deployments of the armoured vehicles, after a firm in Lincoln had built the world's first tank in 1915.

The tank photos are part of a set of German World War I pictures showing the Kaiser inspecting his troops, bombs being prepared before they are dropped from early biplanes and horses wearing gas masks.

First photo is interesting, as it shows the flame thrower on the one soldier's back.
