Gewehr 98 Muzzle Cover

I bought a very good looking gew 98 muzzle cover. Marked Crown B and R and stamped 23 inside the flip up cover. Except it will not fit my gew 98. It does not slide on far enough for the sight cover metal to clear the sight when you twist it into position.

Any ideas? Perhaps for a kar 98?

Help me out here - the barrel of the cover has an insert that appears to be of 2 pieces. The center or core of these 2 pieces appears to be fixed to the end of the cover. There is a collar around this core piece. Is it supposed to slide (compress) forward toward the muzzle? I cannot get it to budge at all with a brass punch. This piece has no corrosion but I could see that that collar is jammed - if it is supposed to move at all. Is this the spring to which you are referring?
 
Got it figured out. the internal sliding mechanism/spring was seized. Freed it with some penetrating oil and a little persuasion with a bamboo punch.
Everything is AOK now. Thanks for the hints.

Eric: I think Gus will agree with me; you now need to show us pictures of that Gew98 of yours with the cover on... :)

(WW1 & WW2 German rifle pics always make me drool! :guns: )
