Gloss v Matt

Sorry for naive questions  but what is the determining factor behind the different finishes one see's on officers pickelhaben in particular ? They seem to range from a high gloss, almost patent finish that reminds me of "bulled" finishes, to almost matt.

Do these variations reflect unit by unit preferences ? Cost of the item and hence individual budget ? Or do they reflect particular time periods i.e. the fashion for a particular year etc ?

There are no naive questions here Istan. I think that if you look at period photos (check out the period Fotos forum) you will see, that the helmet finish was always very shiny, like patent leather. Even the M15 OR's helmets. You see differences in finish today because of the effects of over 90 years of temperature and humidity. Some helmets have survived in excellent condition others have not.
Regarding the finish on officers' fittings and wappen there were differences in quality which were reflected in the cost of the helmet. Brian
