GMGA Feldrekrutendepot in Alexinac

It is difficult to keep up with Joe who keeps posting great GMGA pictures.

This is the depot in Alexinac that was established for these units. The writer confirms the location, although misspelled. The depot was opened around May 7th, 1917. It comprised personnel for training, medical care etc.

Robert,

That is super! Can you please give us a close-up of the two helmets–two completely different styles.

This kind of image is a military historian's dream, the information emblazoned across the walls behind the men, leaves us in no doubt who they are.

Cheers!

I agree. Not much detail there. However, the guy with the big helmet poses another question. Did these units switch helmets? I have several pictures with this kind of helmet allegedly linked to to Macedonia but they are somewhere in this endless pile of postcards I have to scan. Hopefully I will find them soon.

I have this one, showing a member of GMGA 249. I could imaging that particularly in a depot private sun helmets were worn as well.

Yet a definite piece of proof! And this one is dated July 1916? That is pretty early and it is a different style of helmet the than the big one in your first picture. I need to find those pictures we are onto something here! We need Peter to look at the sun helmets.

Hi Joe-
I wish I could add more. The large helmet is a puzzle. If I had to guess, and I hate guessing, it is more of a British Wolseley style helmet that is just too big for the wearer. But I really can't tell.

I don't think it is the Bortfeld Model sun helmet, but it is just hard to tell. I need those other guys to move out of the way so I can get a better look!

Peter
