Picked this up at an antique shop. I’m no expert - but this is what I got for $175

Welcome Swan...? At first glance your helmet looks ok but your pictures are so dark that I can not read the markings on both visors. The ink stamps on the rear visor will tell us what Regiment this is from and provide extra information for you. $175 for this is a Joke even for what I can see here. So take some better photos please.

that is a steal for $175! named as well! great find, but if you could post more pictures of the ink stamps that would be great. Because we can then Identify which regiment it came from.

The regiment is JR63, from Oppeln (VI AK), 5th Kompanie

Thank you. On vacation staying at a B&B & lighting isn’t great here. Tried to take some better pics in the john. They had 2 others at a similar price. One was almost identical, but the metal was silver not gold. Another was a “hard helmet” version. I’m a clock guy - this isn’t my area of expertise. This is my 2nd helmet.

I guess the word on the visor, followed by "2 sept 1914" is the name of a place. It looks French, but I have not yet deciphered it.
It may also be the name of the soldier who took the helmet as a trophy...

Are these brass or some type of plating on the metal? I’d like to clean this one, but not do anything to remove the plating if that’s the case

The fittings are all brass and you had better go back and buy any pickelhaubes they have in this store for that price. You will never see this kind of a deal ever again. The original chin strap on the helmet shown alone is worth more than what you paid for the entire helmet.

I believe the shop has 3 more total. One I believe is almost identical, but the metal parts are silver - says Koenig as well. Another is a hard helmet style, also silver metal I recall. The last one I don’t recall, I think it’s similar to mine. Place is in Maryland if anyone is interested. I wasn’t looking for one of these, they had other WW2 helmets as well. I don’t know enough about them to know if they were good buys or not.

The silver fitting represent pioneers/ engineers and would be a steal for 175.

Congratulations! Looks like a battlefield pick-up, all original, and as already mentioned an absolute steal for 175 $

I would certainly go back and buy the other 3 :), or you can take some pictures and post them here and you'll get some feedback if anything seems wrong with them.

Congratulations to your nice helmet Swanicyouth and welcome to the Forum. Just like Bruno (911car) I think it is a trophy helmet and on the inside of the visor is a French village or place followed by the date „2. Sept. 1914“. Unfortunately I could not decipher the village either.

My version of restoration. I’m guessing the consensus here is to leave these as found - but I do like the cleaned up polished look. I had to sew the back visor on, it was being held with the air vent piece. I’m sure nylon thread it’s far from the original stitching, but it works for me.

They look great. As Brian has said many times, it's up to the individual collector to do what they want with their helmets.

Cheers.

Peter
