Help identify uniform (Pre-WWI)

Hi;
I am trying to pin point which army or unit this gentleman was associated with.
I think he was in the Hessian division during the Franco-Austrian war, but I'm not sure. He was my 2nd great-grandfather, Wilhelm Bach. What little I can piece together of the family shows he died between 1884 (last child born) and 1889 (when his widow and 5 children emigrated to the US).
US Census information shows the family coming from "Hesse-Darmstadt" and another "Ober-Hessen", while a family member seems to recall something that sounds like "castle" (Kassel?).

Note the pointed sleeve cuffs, the piping along the front button edge, the hat, collar and epaulettes, and lack of pockets at the chest.

Can anyone help with this? Thanks!

Most definitely Hessian and probably infantry. This pattern of uniform was still in use by the Grand-Ducal Hessian Division during the Franco-German War of 1870/71 so could even be from that conflict.

Regards
Glenn

There is a short explanation of Hesse-Darmstadt Oberhesse and a map at http://www.pickelhauben.net/Maps2/Hesse-Darmstdt.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
