Help identifying uniform from a portrait

Hello,

I've just acquired a wonderful WW1 portrait of a German soldier off a seller on ebay.

Can anyone identify the uniform for me? I've tried looking on google but I'm finding it a bit non conclusive. I've been trying to find out what the white piping on the shoulder boards signifies.

I've included a pic of the back too as it has a curious inscription in pencil. Inscription states:

Dieses Bild malte ein
Kriegskamerad
im Schützengraben
Weltkrieg 1914/18

Roughly translated it means:

Painted this picture of a war friend
in the trenches
World War 1914/18

I've popped it up on my blog too with my observations up 'til now, if anyone would like to leave a message under it. http://www.amandaclegg.co.uk/11-apr-2015-a-german-soldier/

Thank you for your assistance.

Nice picture Amanda.
A slightly more accurate translation would be "A war friend painted this picture in the trenches", suggesting that the writer is actually the guy on the picture. I am no expert in uniforms but I suspect it will be difficult to identify the unit...

Bruno

I hadn't even considered that Bruno! If that is the case, he would have survived the war. Nice to know.

Thank you.

The white piping is what one would expect on the shoulderboards of a Waffenrock of the infantry, I am not sure, but I think they are the M1907/10 boards, and the tunic looks like it would be a M1910 Waffenrock with the red piping of infantry. I suspect there are other branches that this could apply to, but I would wager he is an infantryman of other rank.
