Help needed with mysterious M17 steel helmet

Not so long ago, I was able to acquire this strange helmet. It's an M17, because of the metal liner band and yet with the M91 lugs for the (missing) chinstrap. There's no makers mark or size visible...
The color appears to be period, but it's a strange brownish glossy paint. The helmet itself looks German, not Austrian, but yet the color does look more Austrian...
Maybe you gentlemen can point out what this might be?

I had a similar one in a relic condition, it went to Australia!
I'll try to find the pic's , it was never identifyed...

Hi Karel,
The 2 front liner split brad rivets--the left one mainly--look as thick as the back one which would mean that by German standards at least, this helmet could've been 'tampered with'/recycled post-war... But I guess it's the color tone that's the main mystery here...
 
Sorry guys, I couldn't resist to this little joke :-" ... This also proves that making conclusions based on pictures alone are not always this easy...
Anyway, here's the little critter together with his big brother...
