Thank you,

I actually have seen something similar in a picture of firemen. The metal trim on the rear visor suggests firemen. The wappen looks like a city marking. The entire thing as a Saxon/Austrian look to it. Age is a good question as these tended to be handed down for quite some time.

Joe,
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate your help. I thought it was a fire helmet with German/austrian origins myself. Now I am really not sure what to think.

At this point I am leaning toward Northern Europe origns, 1820-1840, and from a dragoon/cavarly origins. There are three crowns on the front plate simular to Swedish coat of arms.

I have friends who think it could be lower England due to Elephant and Castle at bottom of front plate and savagemen with clubs???

I'm hoping someone out there is smarter than me on these things.

Thanks again,
Blademan

Elephant and Castle, now that brings back memories, when I was 17, I was in London, I took a cab from Victoria Station to the Imperial War Museum, it cost 80 new pence, which was about a buck and a half then, and quite a lot of a kid on a budjet, I deceided to walk back to save money, and on the way, I passed a pub named Elephant and Castle, about 40 minutes later, I passed another, and about 40 minutes later, I cam to the third, up to that point I had thought that it was a chain, but I realized that there was more around me that looked familiar, I realized that I was going in circles, and I thought that there must be a fork in the road that I did not notice, so I did the logical thing, and crossed the road, thinking that I might go the other way thenext time I cam to the fork that was causing me to loose my way, about 30 minutes later, there was Elephont and Castle across the road from where I stood. I flagged a cab, and it cost 1 pound 20 to get back to the station. I got to see a lot of London that most tourists see, and was informed a few years ago that I was really lost (I knew this when I saw the 4th E&C) and was in a rather tough part of town.

Yea yea Gus....we all know that you were drunk and seeing things. Its ok buddy. Elephants and castles is a very common thing for the inebriated man to see.

That's a god-awful part of London - full of irritating pseudo-cockneys. I bet you were glad to get out?

Naaah, it's not tough - just messy and ugly. Like the people there. :D

Can you give us a better photo of the coat of arms? None of the photos opened on that bottom web site for me.
Also, try google images on something silly like "Castle and elephant coat of arms" or Swedish coats of arms...

Try this:

Scroll down, there's a Swedish Coat of Arms that looks similar??

I even met Andy Capp there, he hit me up for a bob, but I was as tight as he was, but I did give him a bob for an American quarter, that some stupid tourist had given him, like he could spend it there:)

Ron,

Thanks so much! You did it! With your help, I now know this helmet is from the reign of Frederick VI of Denmark and dates between 1808 and 1839.

Now I just need to find out if it is civilian or Military. And if it is Military, what branch of the military. With a royal shield, I wonder if this could a helmet from the King's Guard. Anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks again Ron!

My idea would be to slow the parade down–may we see a picture of the helmet wappen? The savage with a club was a pretty common device.

Elephant beer! Not only tremendous beer but some of the best glasses of the world!

Sorry I haven't figured out how to post pictures here yet.

My first guess is Denmark. The arms have a Danish style about them, plus I'm pretty sure that's the grand collar of the Order of the Elephant hanging from the shield.

Everything on the Danish Coat of Arms you will find here:

Some complementary information: a very similar helmet was offered by Hermann Historica in München in 04/2009, auction 57, lot 4281, a Dragoon helmet early 19th century, Denmark, but with another plate, showing a star with a blank center.
Please check also their web site with free catalogues and results from former auctions.

Okay, how I read Swedish instead of Danish on that other web site (my grandfather is STILL rolling in his grave on that one!), I don't know.
But, same coat of arms. Thanks for correcting the mistake!
