Hi Everyone,

I am still in the learning curve concerning the Pickelhaube and I see nothing wrong on this Hessen Pickelhaube for Officer.

Would you please share your view in this one ?

Is it all good or did I miss anything ?

Many thanks

Kind regards

Hi everyone; so finally I purchased that helmet.
It has now joined my humble Pickelhaube collection
Please find below some additionnal pictures.
It has not been drilled 2 times for placing another Wappen.
It has been sold as a NCO Pickelhaube; but I think it is an officer helmet, am I right ?
Any comments/feedbacks are welcome.

Thanks

It has an officer wappen on it and is a private purchase helmet. I would like to see the Hessen kokarde though. I see no problems.👍

Excellent helmet; a bona fide Hessen officer Pickelhaube, as inferred by Brian. Certainly not for an NCO.

WOW, You have a excellent Officer’s Pickelhaube that seems to have worn extensively but well cared for after it was no longer in use. Wonderful addition to any collection. Thanks for posting!
Best regards
John

Beautiful helmet. My only question is about the fasteners for the spike base, should they be star heads?

A last question for the expert on the forum.... if I get right, as a general rule of thumb, infantry and other foot-troops utilized flat chinscales, while mounted units such as field artillery, train and cavalry used the rounded chinscales ?
This Hessen Helmet has rounded chinscales so my conclusion is it is a Officer Helmet for the Hessen Train Bataillon #18 ( like the helmet displayed at page 180 of the JL Larcade book).

Am I right ?

Thanks a lot

That confused me too but the members cleared that us for me some time ago. There's a lot to learn about helmets.

This picture illustrates these differences between Hessian officer helmets:
Left: infantry or train: curved chinscales, round-headed studs
Right: cavalry (Dragoner): curved chinscales, round-headed studs
Center: infantry regiment 115: flat chinscales, stars

What was the rule in other states was the exception in Hessen.

Thanks a lot for the explanation, it is now clear...Indeed Hessen has very specific regulations !
This is definitely a complex topic with a lot to learn !
That picture with the 3 helmets is beautiful

Bruno, that's an absolutely glorious array of Hessians - photographed beautifully (and some excellent information as well, of course)!
