How to quote another post in mine?

I have been playing around with the 'Quote' tool icon trying to quote an older post into one of my own and failed magnificently on all fronts. Am I even using the correct tool? Obviously I am doing something/not doing something that everyone else seems to have worked out, Can anyone walk me through the process?

Hi Steve,
I select the text I want to quote, and then a little “reply” option shows up under the selected text, and when I press that the website generates a reply with the quote in top, or isn’t that what you’re looking for?

Thank you Lars, I tried it and it seems to have worked pretty well by selecting the title of the thread I want to quote and copying it by cut and paste into the 'quote' box - it acts like a link and takes you right to the thread when clicked. Now I have to try to remember how I did it! You would not believe that back in the '70's I was a programmer, nowadays a five year old would leave me in the dust!
