An interesting image of what appears to be an officer of Husaren-Regiment Kaiser Nikolaus II von Rußland (1.Westfälisches ) Nr.8 wearing the pelisse, or “Pelz.” This iconic piece of the hussar uniform was no longer regulation wear by the late 19th century, and by 1914 only nine regiments had been authorized to wear it by special award. Based on the Westphalian photography studio and the color scheme, I think this is HR8. Also interesting inasmuch as the image is taken outdoors (although this seems to have made focus a challenge.)

He must be an enlisted soldier. The sword knot is a privately purchased one that looks almost identical to an officer's Portepee, but with colours to distinguish squadrons.
I found it very common among hussars, here are some examples (LGHR):
Makes sense - that would explain the issue-style boots, among other things. Beautiful LGHR images!

I'm guessing a well-heeled Gefreiter then - any other NCO would be expected to have tresse on the cuffs, right?
