The weight of the finished dressing should be 130 kg.
Lubricants for leather
a) Dissolve (in a water bath) each a bu of turpentine, castor oil and ground wax, 500 gr. of linseed oil and 15 gr. of wood tar.
b) For sensitive skin. In a water bath dissolve: 50 gr. of turpentine, 100 gr. each of oil and fish oil, 40 gr, of carnauba wax, 15 of asphalt; for fragrance 2 gr, of myrobalan oil (0l. Mirbani).
Blackening for rough] leather
a) Boil 20 parts of iron filings and 12 parts of powdered oakum (galas) in 600 parts of wine vinegar and filter through linen. This mixture serves only to blacken rawhide,
b) 10 parts of tallow, 6 parts of fish oil and 4 parts of earth wax are melted in an iron vessel together with 4 parts of finely scraped tallow soap until it does not dissolve. Then add 1 part ferrous sulphate (vitriol gel.) and 2 parts carbon black. The mass obtained may be diluted with cod-liver oil. It serves not only to blacken leather but also to make it supple.
Preservation of leather products
a) All leather goods in use grow mouldy if they are even slightly exposed to moisture, so they must not be stored in damp places. A good oiling provides some protection against mould, but it cannot completely protect against it. Leather items wet from rain, snow, sweat etc. must be well dried before storage, but not before an open fire. Ordinary blacks, varnishes and leather paints are not protective agents. Only those fats or mixtures of various fats and oils can be regarded as such, which serve to provide footwear, harness and the like with a certain amount of fat, making the leather soft, supple and more or less waterproof. Combinations of liquid fats with tallow are best suited for this purpose.
(b) Special lubricants: Densol consists of fish oil with a small amount of wood tar and myrobalan oil. Glorial, a sole preservative, is a mixture of linseed oil with sand^ perfumed with myroban oil. Majus, a preservative for top skins, is a mixture of fish oil with whale fat, perfumed with birch oil to give it a yuck smell. Mars oil is a fish oil perfumed with myrobalan oil. Semalina is a mixture of 88% linseed oil and 12% vaseline oil, perfumed with myroban oil (Ol. Mirbani
