I found this cleaning out an old family shed

I believe it's a M1887 sunhat but I'm not totally sure. It came from my grandfather after he passed away and was deep in a storage shed at my Mom's place since then, I'm not sure where my g-dad got it but our family on that side has been in USA for a long long time. I'd love to learn more about it, possibly clean it and display it. Any information would be great! I very curious about the 2, is that like 2nd infantry or something?

To my eyes, looks like an M1881 Dress Helmet, Summer Variant, being in white. I think the two might denote to the US 2nd Infantry Regiment, however I could be wrong. It has the later plate on it, so I'd say its made more towards 1890. It also lacks the Chain that goes around these helmets. I personally do not recommend that you clean the helmet, I'd leave it as is, but of course that is up to you. Mind you all of this information is coming from off the top of my head, and I'm no good with these helmets, so someone else may have more useful input, this is just what I'm seeing personally.
