Hi I am new to the site. I came across this pickelhaube and am not confident in my ability to authenticate it or ID it. Any help would be appreciated. I am an extreme newbie on the subject.

Looks like a Baden Zahlmeister (paymaster) to me, but I may be wrong. The pips holding the spike are interesting, not what's supposed to be there.

Thanks Ron. I have looked at as many pics online of authenticate pickelhaubes and have yet to see square ones like those. Is it likely the helmet is authentic but the spike is not?

The spike looks authentic, does the top screw off? Anyway, the pips are officer badges of rank, rather than the star studs that belong in the helmet. Two possibilities: The first, unlikely one, the officer who owned it put them on as a sort of spin on a 'hate belt' (if they're from an allied officer, I really can't tell, it's not my area of interest)... The other is that a post WWI owner put them on because the stars were lost or damaged. The latter is more likely IMHO.

This will be an interesting restoration project with the top cut and pushed in as it is.

Agreed! Goodluck with restoring it to its former glory :D
