information board

Pionier

New member
Hi all,

Since a while I had in my collection interesting "Information board".
Unteroffizier Speisezimmer der 2. Compagine Magdeburgisches Pionier-Bataillon Nr. 4

Unfortunately, the old paint is not in the best condition especially in the place where is the word Untfz. (Unteroffizier).
I was thinking to protect this piece of history, but I would like to keep it old character.
Does anyone have any ideas how to protect this board?
Varnish?

I would appreciate any suggestions :)

The most important rule of conservation is to never do anything that can not be undone. To use any varnish or clear coat will irreversibly damage this artifact. It has survived for nearly 100 years, and all the damage done to it to date can be attributed to exposure and handling. The best way to preserve this is to keep it in a environment free of excessive moisture and minimum light. The normal collections room would be the best place, if you want to cover it to protect it, then use glass.

Best advice you can get!
I am a profesional restorer, and I don't believe what I read some times on fora, when people are talking conservation, and restoration.
Well done Gus!
