I have worked on a similar helmet....Prussian Pioneer officer with this extended cruciform style of inner re enforcement. It is a very interesting support system in that the aluminium arms extend down on all sides for support. The back spine prongs secure the rear arm and there is a small split brad prong behind the helmet plate that secures that arm. The side arms are held in place by the split prongs of the chin scale bosses. This is only the second one of these that I have encountered. Unfortunately, this helmet has seen a lot of abuse over the years. Over a thousand dollars and no silk liner...???
