This is the cover photo of a book I recently bought on medals of the Boxer Rebellion. What fascinated me was the photo on the front and back covers.

These Germans are not wearing sun helmets, and most sources say that is what the Germans wore. These appear to be regular M95 Pickelhaubes, right?

Peter: They are Model 1900 helmets for troops of the East Asia Occupation brigade. The helmet is certainly based on the M95 helmet but the body is covered with grey/green felt, the front and rear visors are green leather and there is no metal rear spine. The spike &base unscrew as one piece. A domed sheetmetal cap is stored inside the top of the helmet and is screwed to the outside of the helmet when the spike/base is removed. The front plate is the Imperial Eagle. This helmet was unique to the East Asian expeditionaty troops. There are good photos of the helmet in The German Army in the First World War, by Jurgen Kraus, page 18.
