The movie by Abel Gance?
Yes, that is the one. The soldiers who played the dead were on leave, and returned to the front after competing the production. Gance said upwards of 80 percent were killed, so in some ways their scenes actually allowed them to return from the dead as the film was released in early 1919.

This is such a great movie. The scene where the dead stand up and walk on the battlefield is so impressive, notwithstanding the fact that the film is over a century old. "J'accuse" was believed to be one of the strongest anti-war indictments ever made. I didn't know figurants were actual Great War soldiers, which makes it all the more poignant.
Thank you for reviving (no pun intended) this memory.
