A few years ago, I was able to buy these items from James Clarks' grand daughter. I just wish, that I had been able to have a conversation with the man himself. Enjoy:
Although he enlisted with the 71st Batt. James ended up being a headquarters scout for the 47th. A very nice piece of trench art and well made:
For some reason James' tunic was trashed but he saved a few brass bits including his scout badge, a match safe, cap badge and collars from the 47th, his ID bracellet and of course his wound stripes. James was wounded twice, the first time by shrapnel to the face and the second a GSW (gun shot wound) to the shoulder.
Last, James Brodie helmet painted black, which would seem appropriate for a CEF scout. Other Clark items purchased included a trench map, souvenier handkerchiefs, post cards etc obviously bought when he was on leave or recovering from wounds. James started a diary (which I have) but it ended when he and his buddies from the 71st were marched into Bramshott camp for training before being sent to France.
