JzP Opinions Please

I just saw this on Ebay and I would like some opinions on whether or not it could be brought back:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Helm-Jager-Zu-Pferd-8-J-P-um-1915-Juncker-lobstertail-Pickelhaube/283667162985?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160811114145%26meid%3Dd049115b65e54b3c88512c2c12cb1948%26pid%3D100667%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D264522741938%26itm%3D283667162985%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2334524&_trksid=p2334524.c100667.m2042

I have been looking for one of these for some time and all of the ones I seem to find have issues. They are also more expensive than this one.
I do not like to buy crap, and my restorations consist of only an occasional replacement of the leather on a chinstrap (always using original fittings).
I seem to be blinded by price on this and I would like opinions before I do something stupid.
The issues I see are pretty basic:
The helmet has been painted. These were parkerized and I wonder if I could safely remove the paint and if a black surface remains underneath.
The liner is loose, but it is still there.
The Kokarden have been repainted and originality is unknown.
The spike studs are incorrect.

I almost hope somebody buys this quickly so I can quit thinking about it!

Opinions are appreciated,

John :-k :-k :-k

Do you restore helmets?.....Because that's what this helmet needs. It has been painted (when its supposed to be rust-blued).

Kockades are repaints (or even reproductions...who knows). It does not have the proper liner or proper screws holding down the spike. And also, it the little cross on the eagle wappen crown still there or is it missing? So many questions, eh? lol

Yes it is original and unit marked but not work how much he is asking....wait for a better one, or talk this guy down bigtime in price and restore it.

Just my opinion....

John, that guy buys and puts everything into a helmet. The liner is wrong. Yes it's a Reg. 8 helmet but a pair of big original cockades coat $400, that liner would cost you another 200 if you can find one. So you do the sums.

I have decided against it. It makes much more sense to continue to wait for a good one.
I see all of the flaws, but I am not sure why you say the liner is wrong.
I am not seeing what is wrong with it.

John :?

I just noticed in the first photo that the liner is hanging down and there is not enough leather on the helmet side for it to be correct. Is this what you are talking about? I was just concentrating on the photo of the helmet upside down. Again --- blinded by desire.

The liner should be a normal Jzp liner with 9 fingers and that one to me is from another county liner.
Tony has a Reg 8 example in his kaiserbunker for reference sms I have one similar to his which I bought months ago.

John,
All enlisted JzP helmets I have seen - except for M15s of course - had black liners. No exception. Amy is correct.
By the way, wise decision to forget about this one...

Amy,
I agree with everything except the nine fingers. I have a size 59 with brown liner and 9 fingers, but I also have a size 56 with 7 fingers. Both are original liners, though one has been repaired, either at the manufacturer or a later addition.

Manufacturers had several differences when producing the same style helmets.

I agree with you that this helmet is not worth restoring, but I am always hesitant to use the terms "always" and "never" in this hobby.

John :)

Hi John yap agreed that it may have fewer or more fingers for some manufacturers. However, that one is not a German liner. Don't buy that one please [-X

I am not going to buy it. The initial excitement of seeing one at that price peaked my interest, but that interest has waned.
Thanks for your input.

John :)

"I am always hesitant to use the terms "always" and "never" in this hobby."

Right. This is why I have written that all JzP helmets I HAVE SEEN had black liners (but I have seen many, and owned five or six).

I didn't mean to ruffle any feathers.
I am simply stating that I have seen exceptions to every rule.

No such thing, John. I only meant to say that I agree with you; variations are many and I can only talk about what I have seen.

A small addition to this discussion and I may be completely off base.....would not the number of fingers be determined by the size of the helmet? I have made repro liners for hauben using a long template, I cut the liner to fit the shell. I can't take into account any rule of "fingers".

Exactly. I was thrown by the nine finger statement so I started looking at my helmets.
It seems my minimum is six, seven and eight are common, nine is also common. I didn't see any of my "issue" helmets with ten.
I am not counting the private purchase, square tongue, type.
It's like the Addams Family safe combination - two, ten, eleven - eyes, fingers, toes.

John :D
