Hi,

Could somebody have a look at:

http://cgi.ebay.fr/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140103206148

I like it, except

- the leather liner with squared tongues instead of round tongues (but even like that, I would say genuine)

- the base of the spike was soldered. So that means, it was broken and repaired (according to me) or to prevent the spike from being pulled out (acording to the seller) ???....

Thank you in advance for your advice

Eric

  • It wasn´t broken and not repaired- it is whole new made incl. the flat brass plate! See haw it was hammered to get rounded shape.See also the "shining" square nuts/ according to me/
    Be carefull.

This helmet was recently (3-4 months) sold on a "live" auction E-bay. I think it went for $950-$1100 + 22% commision. I did not bid because of the soldered on spike(may be able to be repiared or unsoldered but with no 'eyes' you would be taking a chance). I does seem that the guy only polished it up from the previous auction. It all seems OK to me, you can occasionally find spike and base around. I have a 67 model that I am considering selling.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the info...

According to the seller, this helmet was indeed cleaned and polished. Thus the rivets and bolts are very bright.

Concerning the soldered spike the seller answered me that is not so important....but sent me all pictures required. So I would think he is honest and does not hide anything. Nevertheless, this repaired spike is a concern for me.

A couple of coments here. First regarding the liner...on older helmets, we do find this squared tip type of liner and the reference books state that this is ok. Secondly, regarding the leather of the liner and the backing on the chin scales...both show flaking and red rot from 100+ years of use. This in my experience, can not be faked. These problems appear when a helmet has been kept in very dry conditions for many years. There are thousands of pickelhuaben out there that have these same characteristics. Consequently, in my opinion I would accept that the helme is OK. Brian

Hi Brian,

Totally agree with you as far as the leather is concerned. My only concern on this helmet is the base of the spike, heavily repaired in my opinion.

Best regards

Eric
