Landwehr Tschako patterns

Would the WWI Landwehr troops have been issued both 1860 and 1888 pattern Tschakos?
If that's correct, how can the difference be discerned in period photographs?

Sort of... They only wore the Tschako until 1881 when the Landwehr once again adopted the Pickelhaube. However, According to Kraus vol. I p. 468.due to shortages of Pickelhauben in 1914 when war was declared, Landwehr Infantry Regts 8, 24, 39, 47, and 93 were issued old Tschako from storage with the old Landwehr plate, which were later replaced by Pickelhauben. So it is safe to assume that some of these would have been retired M1888 (like my example, which I date as wartime). But unless you can see that air vent on the M1888, they look more or less the same. But in photos, 99.9& of the time you are probably looking at Landsturm, not Landwehr.

Is there any documentation to support the appearance of the oval plate on the 1892, '95, or '97 style Tschako, then, or on a felt Tschako?

Good luck with documentation. Personally, if I see a period photo, that is all I need. Perhaps some will appear on this thread now that you have asked.

Photographic documentation from the period is what I should have typed. I haven't run across any pictures of the oval plate mounted on anything but an older Tschako yet.

I think Tony has laid it out extremely well. I think that perhaps the list by Kraus is perhaps incomplete.

One cannot jump to the conclusion that shako automatically means a Landsturm soldier or unit. In addition to the many units equipped with more modern shakos the older ones were used for other units also as this ersatz battalion photograph shows.

And talk about old!

That's the first time I've ever seen the oval plate on a felt shako, but the Hessian plated one really takes the cake.
Thanks!

Now this is a very very very good question. It is very clearly marked on the back of the card Landwehr infantry Regiment 116–actually to the Landwehr Ersatz Battalion JR 116.
He is wearing the uniform of a/116–with a very old Landwehr hat. Why is he not Landsturm????
I have looked at all of the ersatz battalions from the brigades but cannot place this. You can see the bottom of the shoulder strap.
