Dear all,

Recently, I found these haubes on the internet. The sad thing is that are probably fake (at least that is my humble opinion) and are sold against regular prices.

The first one:

Second one:

Third one, a rare Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt haube:

Best regards,

Edwin

The site has an amazing amount of fakes on it, including a Wurttemburg Tschako and a Saxon metal Pickelhaube--there's even a modern copy of a U.S. Civil War era percussion pistol being marketed as a deactivated original.

Maybe they should add some authentic-looking maker marks to the Pickelhauben, like "Quatsch" or "Blödsinn."

Speaking of German sites, has anyone been on Beck Militaria recently?
They are adamant about advertising their Kurassier as a Jager Zu Pferde and mix-up M16 with M18 Stahlhelms and then they try to convince you they've got over I don't know how many years of experience in the field...

I tried to acquire that Kurassier--falsly advertised as a Jager--last year but then I had doubts when I realized they wouldn't even correct that description and wouldn't have better pictures in there. I mean how could they provide me with a detailed certificate of authenticity with an erroneous description?!

Hey Ron,

Took a look, but the one I wondered about was the 'infantry officer' with rounded chinscales... Like any other dealer, you have to go with your gut feeling and experience. Sometimes you can get something very nice that's poorly described, other times... not.

Hello Ron, hope you're having a good Sunday (mine is almost over since it's past 9:30pm here in Lebanon)
So what did you think about that Kurassier (which has been there for at least 6 months)?

Actually, those are nicer than the one I'd looked at. Are those photos of their repro's? They're impressive.... I wonder if the German Army is thinking of using them again for parades or ceremonies... Of course, I don't really understand their feelings about the Kaiserzeit.

:D Ron

They are replicas. The front plates are copper electroform (galvano) copies and not cheap, either. Last time I heard, a 13th Ulan officer plate was over $600.

Where did you see the others?
Perhaps here? http://www.joerg-dehn.de/

It's on my bookmark page at work. I'll take a look when I get there tomorrow or Tues (if this storm keeps up in the midwest).

I should get a job making spiked helmets in Germany... what fun!

Here it is: (not as nice as the ones being made near Halle and Wiemar)

I don't think so...

Ron

I hope they don't get better with time and practice.

There's a place in Germany that's pretty good. What gives these away are the pregnant spikes, but I do agree with you!

:D Ron

Might be a silly question, but what do you mean by 'pregnant spikes' ?

Hey Joe,
The spike has a bit of swelling toward the top, giving a bit of a compound curve rather than a parabolic curve to the contour of the spike, It is somethng that one can see at a glance when you know what to look for, but if not, it can escape the eye.
Best
Gus
