Some time ago, a of mine friend had mentioned a film he'd seen about Verdun. If I remember correctly, it was French made and possibly subtitled. In any case, this friend (who is also a military museum curator) said this was hands down the best film depiction of trench warfare he'd ever seen. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I believe the film you seek is Verdun: Visions d'histoire. Made in 1928, the film is silent with intertitles.

http://www.amazon.de/Verdun-NTSC-Paul-Amiot/dp/B000MAH4A2/ref=sr_1_2/302-3252702-2612841?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1194320072&sr=1-2

The amazon.de price is half that of amazon.fr and the format of the German disc is Region O NTSC, meaning it will play on any North American DVD player. It also has subtitles in English.

Another great French film dealing with the war is Le Croix de Bois

The link below is for a review of the Raymond Bernard film:

One of the more harrowing scenes in Le Croix de Bois depicts German pioneers placing mines beneath the French trenches. The French soldiers hear the digging, and can only hope to come off the line before the explosives are detonated.

For more on that subject, I recommend the following:
