M15 german kurassier helmet finish

Does anyone know how the M15 model kurassier cavalry helmet was finished? Is the outside of the body nickel plated, or is it just bare metal that has been polished?

Or is it coated with something else?

Can anyone please let me know?

Mine is just bare steel...no plating or coating of any kind.

I picked up one last month which has a light coating of rust over 80% of it. I've been contemplating buffing it out or just slathering it in RIG grease and leaving it alone....
