Picked this one up several months ago, Brian did some great restoration on the chinscales and restiching the visor! Just got it back and here it is!.

It is a M1891 Baden Police Officer helmet. Love the large Kokarden that measures at 60mm. The detail on this helmet is awesome, especially the front plate.

Joe- I am not sure there is any easy way to tell a fire and Police apart. I am baseing mine as Police as it is pictured in one of the Police helmet books by Radecke and stated as such..... :?

Hey Slim
I see you changed your name, how many alieses do you have. To be honest, I think it is a good move, you are too easy to find anyway.

This is the Schutzmannschaft plate, used under Friedrich I. There is a strict differentiation between Gendarmerie, Exekutivpolizei and the royal Schutzmannschaft in this time.

Brass plates were used by the ranks Schutzmann, Sergeant, Wachtmeister and Oberwachtmeister according to Erich Radecke.

I have been looking for such a plate for some time because the lower part of mine is missing..

Robert tell us more! My understanding is that the gendarmes had a different chain of command than the executive police. I don't know where the Schutzmannschaft entered the picture. We could all learn a great deal from this.

yes, more information please!

I have all Erich Radecke's books, but I struggle with the German text.

Thanks

As I am not a specialist for police nor for Baden, I will just take from Radeckes book which is not allways fully clear:

The Schutzmannschaft is evidently a royal force used in the cities and larger towns. Beginning in 1886, new helmets were issued which had the "Beamten"-spike (the rounded spike similar to the Prussian police model). In the eight largest cities these had the normal Baden "Greif" (as on military helmets) and chinscales "on hooks" (probably using the M87 hook). These had yellow metal parts.

In the other towns and cities, the variation with the mirrored "F" and crown was used. He writes that this was normally silver. The officers helmets had gilt parts with "smooth spike on cross-plate" (here he referres to a picture showing a normal military-style cross plate and straight, pointed spike) and chinscales with slotted screws. Except for the spike, this officer model resembles Slims helmet.

Then he states that the ranks Schutzmann, Sergeant, Wachtmeister and Oberwachtmeister use brass plates and parts, and black leather chin straps attached by hooking. This sounds like my helmet.

So I dont know which ranks actually used the silver plate. He also continues that variations are known with silver "F"-plate and chin scales.

The Gendarmerie force was founded in 1829 basing on the previous "Polizeigarde". They used a great variation of head gear over time, but also turned out using spiked helmets after 1887. These had round spike bases and normal pointed spikes, with the Greif front plate. There is no information when excatly the Schutzmannschaft was split off as separate unit.

One thing that I noticed when restoring "Slim's " helmet was that the cruciform spike base has faux round brads on the surface. Underneath, there are 4 screw posts solderd to the base which extend through holes in the shell and then have the usual square brass nuts holding the base in place. I love that huge Baden kokarde. Those chin scales look ok too ha ha!! This is an excellent piece! Congrats James

Yep beautiful helmet and the faux brads are fully correct. What I just noticed is that it has a rear visor trim. That is a detail I did not see yet on a Baden helmet (even though some other states seems to have used it regularly).

Regretably the kokarde on mine is just the normal OR thing
