Chaps,

I was the second highest bidder on this helmet but beaten in the last moments. I now have a second chance offer to purchase. What do you think? I don't yet have a tschapka

Chap,

Everyone I know who has received a "second chance offer to purchase" was ripped off. people can send these and you think it is the seller, but it is just some A-hole looking for your money. If you are interested, e-mail the seller through the listing to make sure it actually is him. T

Tony, your thoughts on the helmet?
Ugh. I hate commenting on ebay items. But, it looks like a nice example, however, the eagle Wappen loops have been pushed through slits above the grommets. Perhaps original, but that is all I would see everytime I looked at the helmet. Plus it is missing the strap and Kokarde and finding an original Feldzeichen is very difficult. Personally, I would pass.

I totally agree. The helmet looks overall good but the double holes behind the plate are very worrying. These Tschapkas are not that rare that you cannot wait and find a flawless one. Be VERY careful about these second offers. It happened to me several times and it was always coming from crooks. Just send a message to aisne1914 who was the high bidder. I know him. He would tell you right away.
Good luck,
Bruno

Hi Flash,
I totaly agree with Tony and Bruno in all point of view.
Wait for a better example.
...and a second chance on eBay... Hmmmmmmm, stay away.

Purely for the sake of learning: Aren't the two holes in the eagle wappen meant to accomodate a Garde star?

Cheers,

Laurie

A lot of M15 Tschapkas dont have the star attached, Laurie. I'm not sure why. Same reason that they phased out castor sugar and jam in wartime doughnut production I guess. :sad8:

Hi,

Just one more piece of information: I know Aisne14 as well (first name : Eric, like me, but not me!) He is a collector of this kind of items (1914 period). Don't hesitate to call him to know why he gave up his bid....

Overall, I think this type of item is not really seldom.

Eric

All the M1915 Tsapkas I have seen with Garde type Wappen have had two oddities in common. They have not had a star and the prongs of the wappen were cut into the shell just above the grommeted holes.

You are correct Laurie, the 2 slots are meant for the garde star. The stern by the way can have small loops soldered to the back which fit very small leather wedges or we can also find split brads which are placed in the holes and then bent back. Brian
