My friend John wrote a nice piece on collecting the M1917 .45 Revolvers

A nice piece. I have one each of the Colt and S&W model 1917. They were designed to fire the rimless Colt .45ACP by use of a "moon" clip. Later, enterprising ammo makers delivered the .45 "autorim" which will work in the model 1917 without the use of "moon" clips.

These are great firing pistols and quite accurate. I think S&W had a better polish and many fine examples of either Colt or S&W are extant.

I haven't had the pleasure of holding an arsenal re-build as described in the article but I will be on the lookout to add one to my small collection.

I prefer the Colt to the S&W, the action is more robust, and has fewer moving parts, I also like the cylender catch on the Colt better. But both are great revolvers, Maggie carried my M1917 Colt in her purse for many years for protection, I felt that the hollowpoint bullets staring out of the cylinder would let an asailant know that there was a world of hurt about to come their way, it is the kind of weapon that does not need to be fired to protect, and that is the best kind.

These Gun Collecting segments have been very popular on my newsite. The biggest problem is that these are a lot of work!
