M95 Oldenburg opinions

Just picked up this Oldenburg OR helmet and would like opinions.

No unit markings which sucks.

Nice original kokarden and chinstrap that shows a lot of wear.

Took wappen off and compared it to a couple others I have and looks good.

No vent on back spine.

liner is soft with partial drawstring.

No extra holes.

I see no problems. Screw post wappen suggests pre 1895. Kokarde is proper colour for original.

Very nice helmet James!
I have a reservation though (since you are asking)... the Oldenburg cockade. To me it looks like an artificially aged modern copy. But I may be wrong...

The wappens with screws usually make a good impression on the dome.
It should fit that impression exactly, but even then it could still be a transformed Prussian without the stamp.
But I do see some signs that tis may well be an original Oldenburg, but that info is classified. :wink:
 
I disagree with everybody and think that James had better rid himself of that one as quickly as he can. James, PM me with your asking price. :wink:
Seriously, it looks very nice to me, and I would love to have that one in my collection! Great find. IMHO

Looking good! The kokarde looks in the pictures maybe a bit shiny and so, but that can be a photographic thing?

Good morning Gents,

This shell clearly seems to be a M95 pattern (grommeted holes). So it should show a ventilated rear spine, but this is a non ventilated M91 spine....And this M91 spine is fixed on the back visor with a nut, like a M95 :-k

Screw post wappen indicates a helme pre 1895. I believe that the non vented spine also indicates pre 1895. According to Lacarde vol 1 pg 28 the vent was introduced in 1895. So probably a model 1891 helmet here.

The grommets, side posts, spine attachment to the rear visor and general shape of the shell are typical of an M95, Brian. This should be all very different on a M91, I think...
 
Or, perhaps some sort of transition piece then Bruno? Using up older style parts on a newer "95" shell for practical purposes.
