Mod. 1871-87 ??

Hello to all,
I found on the web a haube that in my opinion is a mod. 1871 (Baden)upgraded to the mod. 1887, wwith the addition of the two hooks for the chinstrap. Even if he is a bit out of shape, the condition are quite good and all the parts are original and untouched.
The only component that is missed is the chinstrap; looking on different books I found two partial pictures, one with two sliding leather loops and the second with a buckle on the right side.
Someone has a clear picture or one exemple of a mod. 1887 chinstrap? What do you think about my small treasure?
Thank you in advance for the help.
Franco
PS : as normal for me, I'm fighting with the pictures. I hope the the pictures will appear.... Sorry!

This one belongs to my good friend in California. I unfortunately do not have an M1887, it is the last model of helmet I need to find.

Tony,
thanks for your help. This kind of chinstrap looks likes another one on a Wuertemberg haube; in this case is clear that there is a sliding metal buckle (type 91) and only one leather loop.
On the picture I saw (Wuertemberg) was visible only the right side (leather loop).
Thanks again
Franco

  • Hello Tony,Franco and all other guys,
I reveal this your discusion in former topics and I need to clear here little discrepancy facing this wonderful and rare mod.1887.
Tony has introdused to me this helmet in his "Bunkr" webs- as a new type, with the new pattern of base-spike:no perlings and 5 ventil.holes-instead of the 2 , by the former models. Also the high of the spike was reduced in compare to the former ones/the own helmet was markedly reduced/ So my question: why this Saxon and Baden ones - both have not the "new" spike?! And more-why the Baden-Franco´s one- has the brass visor trim?

I am looking forward to your reply.
    best regards to all,
    Alexandr

Honestly Alexandr, I have no idea. The Prussians seem to have followed the regulations quite closely, with all the features of the M1887. However, examples from Baden, Saxony, and a few other strates seem to pop up with a mix of M1871 and M1887 features. And they appear to be correct, I just do not know why.

  • Hello Tony ,

thank you for your fast response.
Nevertheles it seems to me quite strange that the upgrading of the old-former helmet would have been done from a half only. There is also quite big disproportion of the look of these helmets. The performed upgrading refered to quite extensive cut down of the body -so the new- lower and slimer spike suits well. But the old one - not so much.
Now a days we can only speculate about that all and it is nice-isn´t it?

    best regards,Alexandr
