Well, if a guy is going to get his 100th Pickelhaube, it might as well be a significant one, not the most expensive,
but significant in regards to the evolution of the Pickelhaube which interests me very much as many of you know.
So click HERE for many more photos including close-ups.

Nice write up! What you make of a cork with two leather visors? It would be just too good to ask to find one of these with a date stamp. Nice helmet!

Thank you. You mean like the one I picked up from Randy below? This helmet by the way, I was picking up for Peter W. and he has it now. To me, it is an Ersatz 1914 cork, that has had damaged visors replaced with leather ones. Under the liner, you can see where they cut the damaged cork visors off. The Instandsetzungsamt (repair depots) must have had crates of new visors for repairs such as this, as the visors do not have double-stitching and did not come off a leather helmet.

Nice helmets Tony, and congrats on your 100th!

So was the purpose of the experimental 1905/06 model to cut down visibilty in the field? I'd never heard of this model before so thanks for posting this one.

Hi Spikeymikey,
We have already commented on this model, in Period Photographs, "Leather Visor Unit", that appeared on the forum on November 7th, 2007. I had added pictures of mine, which is exactly the same as Joe's. Mine is marked to JR135, and the maker's mark is Maury and Co.
I fully agree with everything Joe wrote on this helmet.

Bruno, in what thread did Joe comment on these? Sheesh! I find it, photograph it, research it, write it up, Joe gets all the credit!!

I completely admit that I was feeling (typically) pretty cocky and comfortable with my knowledge about Pickelhaubes until that "leather visor unit photo' thread occurred and you posted your example and pointed out what it was. Thanks for that. Then I had the opportunity to find one and believe myself very fortunate indeed.....

My mistake... I meant of course that
I agreed with what Tony wrote on this helmet... (although I cannot remember having ever disagreed with Joe...)
Sorry, Tony...
Nice helmet. I looked for a date on mine but in vain. Cannot remember if Maury stamps usually come with a date. The stamp on mine is hardly legible .

Thanks Bruno - I'll go check that thread out.

Looks like a Preußen Model 1905/06 Experimental Pickelhaube is for sale on ebay.

Congrats on the big 1-0-0! I know many helmet collectors with hundreds of helmets, but you have 100 truly WORTH having! :D

Even though they cut the cork visors off and replaced with leather, it is a period repair. Still, a very desirable helmet and quite rare. I have not seen many. Phil
