My steel M15,black with M95 fittings...

Thanks John, mine has a large 3 pressed in the metal, behind the wappen,no other marking but the size 58 and the maker,on the liner. Greetings,Coert :thumb up:

To my mind, this is a repainted feldgrau ersatz helme. The black paint may be perfectly legitimate and done during the war. The fact that the inside has been painted as well leads one to think that this is legitimate. However, the shape of the helme, the striations (lines) on the outside of the shell, the liner, the position of the size stamping are all characteristic of the feldgrau ersatz examples that are shown here on the forum. I also find it unusual that we have the split prongs of the liner band positioned through the leather liner where they could contact the soldats' head. There are many anomalies in this hobby, and this could be one. I just wanted to point out, that except for colour, this helme is a typical feldgrau ersatz tin helme.

I agree with you Brian,I personally thought that it was done during the war,as I have seen examples just like mine. But not so many, most are feldgrau.I had the thought at the time I bought it,that the question about the prongs on the inside, while they are supposed to be behind it.Might be they put it back like that after painting. There are no traces of feldgrau anywhere on it. :)

I think you are right Coert, they had to take the liner out to paint, and just made a mistake with the prong while reassembling things. Your helmet is still a very nice example.
