Neck guard ribs - new to me....

Maybe I just haven't been paying attention. But I cannot recall ever seeing a ribbed surface on the underside of the neck guard.

Sons of Adam used those in Narnia. (sorry, couldn't resist... early Monday morning here. :) ) I'm interested too. Is it some sort of fiber?

No it's leather... and I don't know why they made the neck guard this way... Maybe others can give an answer?

Since leather bends so easily, I'd say that it's probably a thinner leather (lesser quality????) and that the ribs are to add strength to keep it from curling up right away.

I suppose it's some kind of strenghtning for the neck guard, however the leather has a normal tickness... Maybe it's just a different way of producing or maybe just for visual reasons or just to differenciate... I really don't know...

:-k ditto! I do have an M15 with a double sewn neck guard made from two thinner pieces of leather, the inner one of which has the pebbled 'cowhide' finish like a US football, so I thought this would be something similar.... interesting!
Maybe a shoe maker or leather worker could give us an answer.
