Need Help with Unit Marking on Helmet

Hello,

I need assistance with pinning down a Regiment Number on the underside of a back visor.

I can't quite make out if the number is a "93" or a "96"

Helmet has a plain brass Prussian enlisted pattern front plate on it.

Thanks in advance gentlemen!

Best Regards,

Alan

I would hope that it is a "6" since the helmet has a plain enlisted Prussian Wappen. IR93 and the 2nd and 3rd battalions of IR96 wore a "FUERST" type line Wappen. 1st Battalion IR96 wore a regular gilt line Wappen.

It could be an "8" ? IR98 wore a regular Prussian Wappen as well.

John :)

IMO : 99 Regt 1912 9th Companie condition #1 . The 99th also wore the typical brass infantry wappen. My opinion is based on the curve on the tail of the number, to me it matches the other 2 nines stamped here.

Alan ;
I will put my two cents worth in .
I R 91 Oldenburg
I R 92 Braunschweig
I R 93 Anhalt
I R 94 Sachsen -Weimar
I R 95 Sachsen - Meiningen - Colburg - Gotha
I R 96 / I Batl Prussian line eagle
II Batl Reuss ; III Batl Schwartzburg - Rudolstadt

All the above can be ruled out except I R 96 / I Batl
but since your helmet is to the 9th Co.
It would not be I Batl

so you have 3 that remain
I R 97 ; I R 98 and I R 99

Like Brian says the bottom drop looks like the leg of a 9

My vote would be for 99. If I can get your permission, I would like to add that to the list. I will put a note on it that says that there is some controversy as to what it says.

For me, after a few observations, logically and clearly a 98R, because of typical marking pattern usually seen on helmets of this regiment (not JR in front of the number but only R behind it).

Like this one:

Also note, that the bottom part of the "8" is much wider than the top part. On the number "9" this is exactly the opposite. The top part is bigger. Further, it is not a good idea to compare the "9" in the regiment mark with the other "9" in the company mark...Because those two marks were applied at different unit levels and at different time. The pattern of marking at those different levels was always different and it is mostly a very good sign auf authenticity to see those different patterms on the same helmet. First level: Bekleidungsamt, second level: unit Kammer, third level: Bataillon Kammer, fourth level: company Kammer. That´s the way to understand the different marks with their different typography.

The only other possibility "could" be the JR99. But I don´t think so, because the JR99 pattern markings were not 99R but JR99, just like this one:(and most of the time, the BA XV is seen near the unit stamp)

PS: Francois (festwagner), a helmet which would pleased you if it were in your collection, because garrison in Metz :)

You may be right but I do not think you can be definitive in this. There are five years between the two marks and in those five years the people/method of making the markings could easily have morphed. I think you can certainly say that about 1907. Speaking of which… Can I use your picture for the list?

Philippe ;
You sure do know the Imperial Armee .
I just acquired a Musicians shoulder strap
in Yellow with the number 17 on it
The person I got it from thinks that it is
H R 17
But the model of strap is the 1898 pattern
and I don't think that H R 17 had numbers
on their straps that early .
My other thought is that it is the Prussian I R 17
but my references show I R 17 took green shoulder straps .
The M 1898 strap for musicians should be green also as
followed the regular shoulder strap color up until
the M 1908 strap came into use for musicians .
I know some units changed A K at times .
Do you know of I R 17 being in an A K that had yellow shoulder
straps between 1898 and up to 1908 ?
I have tried to think of any other # 17 unit
that could be yellow , but with no luck .
Thanks
Steve
