I wish it was true, but I do not think so. I think my helmet is junk -- inexpensive junk but junk nonetheless. This is a classic example of not following Tony's advice as he laid out several days ago. I was trying to rationalize that it may be like the helmet in volume one of Larcard.

Johansson's book Spiked Helmets mentions fire helmets with spikes soldered on top of the comb (page 54).
It looks like the Germans would've simply removed the comb and added a
spike via the normal method.
It's a mystery.

I would suppose that these are simple examples of commander helmets. Commanders of fire brigade did usually where spikes. I remeber a story of a commander who was arrested by the french on a trip over the rhine river because they held him for military personnel. On a budget, such a helmet would be a cheap way to distinguish the chief of a group.
